Book Review #18: The Magicians' Guild

"We should expect this young woman to be more powerful than our average novice, possibly even more powerful than the average magician."

This year, like every other, the magicians of Imardin gather to purge the city of undesirables. The Magicians' Guild by Trudi Canavan is the first book in "The Black Magician Triology". However, there is a prequel to it, which is basically a history book. That book, The Magician's Apprentice, I reviewed last year here. As for The Magicians Guild, I would give it 4/5 Stars.

The first time I read a book by Trudi Canavan I was already blown away by her writing style. She can describe things into rather detail, but still making vivid and interesting. The world she created for this fantasy serie is amazing. It is not fantasy in the sense of dragons and mythical creatures, but does have magic included in a new and own way.

At some points in the story you can notice that this is the first book of the series, because it takes fairly long before the real action starts let's say. I can't tell too much about it, because I don't want to spoil the storyline for those who haven't read it yet, but are still planning to.

The characters are great though. And I'm excited to see more of them in the other books. I especially liked the character of Rothen, who isn't actually a main character until halfway through the book, but he has his flaws, but still sshows to be one of the better characters. I'm also very curious to see where the story of Sonea and Cery is going to (btw don't you just love the names?).

All with all, action wise not the most exciting book yet, but very well written, good plot building and I'm excited to spend more time with these characters as the series progress.
