Movie Review: The Great Gatsby

“The Great Gatsby” follows Fitzgerald-like, would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz and bootleg kings. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan. It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super-rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.
I have to admit that I'm not a big fan of Leonardo DiCaprio, like at all. I don't know what it is, but his acting has never been that phenomenal to me. However, his acting in his most recent movies was more appealing to me and since I really wanted to see 'The Great Gatsby' I decided to see it in cinema anyway, despite of the main role for Leonardo. And I was more than glad that I saw it in the cinema.

Let me first of all come back to the point of 'not liking Leonardo's acting' a lot. He did well in this movie, though in the beginning I struggeled a little with how believable he was as Gatsby. The accent just didn't do it for me at all. But I got used to it and the more was revealed about Gatsby, the more I appreaciated Leonardo's writing. He did well for me.

The story line of the movie is great, the sypnosis above doesn't even do justice to how well thought out the story is. I haven't read the book, but I can guess they adapted it quite well. The characters all have something interesting to them and you just love to hate them or hate to love them (and that changes back and forth all the time). I don't want to spoil the plot for those who don't know it yet, but there are some shocking moments in there that I absolute did not see coming. The turning point in the movie left me gasping for breath, jumping out of my set of a frigthning sound and then well, then it just left me sobbing. It's fabulous, you won't be dissapointed.

I saw the movie in 3D which beforehand I wasn't too pleased about, but it was the only option in the city I'm living. Throughout the movie it didn't bother me all too much that it was in 3D, but then again it didn't add too much either. With some of the famous parties of Gatsby, it had a nice extra effect with all the glitter and flapper going on. But besides that, I don't think you miss a lot if you would watch it in 2D.

  4. Hmm, it doesn't really seem like the kind of movie that'd be interesting to watch in 3D. I want to see the movie, but I'm going to try to read the book first.
